The lives of trees are etched in their bark
The soil, the sun, the rain, the woodpeckers, and the caterpillars -
all leave their stories behind.
Trees make us look up, but it is the eye-level splendor that attracts
my attention.
For years I wandered the woods oblivious to the beauty, drama, and
humor embossed into these massive pillars of the forest.
It has become an obsession and a spiritual practice.
I use an antiquated 2 mega-pixel point-and-shoot digital camera. It has
minimal controls. I don't use a tripod.
It makes me slow down, move closer, regulate my breath, steady my hand.
It clears my mind of distractions.
Each tree becomes an intimate friend.
For
the first time I see the trees for the forest
